THE STORY BEHIND THE ROSEMARY-SMOKED NEGRONI

The Negroni is a classic cocktail that splits the world in two. On one side, it is way too bitter for the average Joe or Jane unaccustomed to amaro cocktails. On the other hand, there are the hardened imbibers who find the balance between sweet vermouth, bitter Campari, and floral gin absolutely perfect.
In this Negroni, I added an additional sensory element with the essence of smoke and rosemary. To garnish your cocktail with this savory, aromatic note, simply smoke a sprig of rosemary with a kitchen torch or lighter before garnishing your drink.

INGREDIENTS IN THE ROSEMARY-SMOKED NEGRONI:

  • 1 ounce Campari
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 1 ounce London Dry gin
  • 1 rosemary sprig

          Boulevardier About & Recipe

Consider the Negroni: made with gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. The Negroni is a cocktail at once sharp and smooth, lean and lush, brusquely bitter and slightly sweet. A cocktail, in other words, with the kind of bright, clean character perfectly suited for a summer day, but robust enough to hold its own at any time of the year.
This isn't a Negroni. It is, however, the Negroni's long-lost autumnal cousin. First noted in print in 1927 in a slender volume called Barflies and Cocktails, and forgotten almost ever since, the Boulevardier takes the same Negroni formula--a good dose of gin brushed up with equal parts Campari and sweet vermouth--and gives it a twist by substituting whiskey for the gin.

          Ingredients

          • 1 ounce bourbon or rye whiskey
          • 1 ounce Campari
          • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
          • Garnish: orange twist or cherry
          • Directions

            1. 1.
Pour ingredients into a mixing glass and fill with cracked ice. Stir well for 20 seconds and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry or a twist of orange peel.
Note: As with the Negroni, the Boulevardier is flexible; contemporary palates may appreciate bumping up the whiskey to 1 1/2 ounces and dropping the other ingredients to 3/4 ounce. Try it both ways and see what you prefer.

          Mojito

The Mojito complimenting summer perfectly with a fresh minty taste. The mixture of white rum, mint, lime juice, sugar and soda water is crisp and clean with a relatively low alcohol content, the soda water can be replaced with sprite or 7-up. When preparing a mojito always crush the mint leaves as opposed to dicing to unlock oils that will assist with enhancing the minty flavour.

          Ingredients;
          10 fresh mint leaves
1/2 lime, cut into 4 wedges
2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
          1 cup ice
1 1/2 fluid ounces white rum
          1/2 cup club soda

Essential Bar Stock Customized to How You Drink

When stocking your home bar, you have many choices. You can go the traditional route and mimic a professional bar. This will include the essential liquors and other ingredients needed for the most popular cocktails and offers the most versatility.
However, you don't need to include everything and your home bar should be customized to what you actually drink. If you prefer whiskey over vodka, focus your attention on diversifying your whiskey selection. The same goes for liqueurs andnon-alcoholic mixers. After all, there's no need to stock something you are not going to use.

Think about what you like to drink and make your bar fit your individual style, taste, and budget. You can always add more as you discover new cocktail recipes or find a new distilled spirit to try.

While you are thinking about stocking your bar, you'll also want to think about essential bar tools. These will help you mix those drinks and, again, you can add only what you need when you need it. There are no rules and since it is your bar, it should work for you.
